Diabetes is rapidly emerging as the new global epidemic. The ccurrent prevalence in the Western countries approximates 10% and the global prevalence of diabetes is exprected to double in the nest three decades. Affected patients frequently develop peripheral vascular disease and neuropathy which increase the risk of superficialm wounds and ulcers. The impaired trophic environment and disturbance of the immunological defense contribute to an elevated risk of cutaneous infections. Due to its anatomical location, the lower legs and feet are especially prone to skin trauma and infection.
